There were scenes of celebration at Exmouth Lawn Tennis Club as their men’s team secured promotion to Division 2 of the Exeter District Tennis League, capping a dominant 2026 campaign with the Division 3 title. Marking back-to-back promotions after lifting the Division 4 crown the previous season, and now setting their sights firmly on making an impact in Division 2.
Finishing top of the standings with an impressive 84 points from 14 matches, Exmouth proved the benchmark side across the season, dropping just one match all year. Their record of 11 wins, two draws and a single defeat underlines a campaign built on consistency, depth, and a ruthless edge in key moments.
Setting the Pace Early
From the outset, Exmouth established themselves as the team to beat. A string of early victories created daylight between themselves and the chasing pack, particularly over closest rivals Sidford A, who finished four points behind on 80.
Crucially, Exmouth dominated the head-to-head metrics that often decide tight leagues. Their cumulative rubber score of 84–41 and games margin of 568–349 (61.9%) highlights not just wins, but emphatic ones. Even when matches were close on paper, Exmouth consistently found another gear.
Title Race Pressure
Sidford A pushed hard throughout the season, registering 10 wins of their own, but a trio of losses ultimately proved costly. Meanwhile, Tiverton and David Lloyd Exeter A remained competitive in the top four, each capable of taking points off anyone on their day.
Exmouth’s ability to avoid slip-ups against mid-table opposition, such as Woodbury and Newton St Cyres, proved decisive. Where others faltered, Exmouth delivered.
Standout Performances
Several results defined the season:
Statement victories over promotion rivals – Exmouth’s strong results against Sidford A laid the foundation for their title charge, swinging momentum firmly in their favour.
Clinical finishing – Matches regularly ended with convincing rubber margins, reflected in their league-best 67.2% rubber win rate.
Late-season composure – A perfect run-in, closing the season with five consecutive wins, ensured there would be no late drama in the title race.
Strength Across the Squad
Unlike some teams reliant on one or two standout pairings, Exmouth’s success was built on depth. Doubles combinations rotated effectively, maintaining high performance levels across all courts. That versatility made them incredibly difficult to prepare for.
The Road Ahead
Promotion to Division 2 presents a new challenge, with stronger opposition and tighter contests expected. However, based on this season’s evidence, Exmouth will head into 2027 with confidence and momentum. If their blend of consistency, squad strength, and competitive edge carries forward, Exmouth LTC won’t just be aiming to survive in Division 2, they’ll be looking to make an immediate impact.
